Cultural Origin

Dragon boat racing traces back to the Warring States period, around 278 BCE. The poet Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River after his state fell to Qin forces. Local fishermen raced out in boats, beating drums to scare away fish and dropping rice dumplings to feed his spirit. The ritual became an annual practice, eventually formalized as the Dragon Boat Festival (端午節, Duānwǔjié) on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. The boats themselves carry dragon imagery—head at the bow, tail at the stern. A drummer sets the paddling rhythm. Twenty paddlers synchronize their strokes. The format hasn't changed much in over two millennia.

Swiss Adaptation

The race in Eglisau started in 1993. It runs on the Rhine, not the Yangtze or the Pearl River. Teams compete in four categories: Fun Woman (all-female), Fun Mixed (equal gender split), Fun Open (any configuration), and Elite Mixed. The event spans a weekend in late June—opening party Friday, qualifications Saturday, finals Sunday.

Registration is competitive. Spaces are limited. The system is first-come, first-served, with early access reserved for sponsors and the top three teams from the previous year. In 2024, teams registered from Ireland and China—specifically the Club World Champion from Dongguan. Swiss clubs competed alongside them.

The race distance is 420 meters. Heat times range from 90 seconds to two minutes. Teams of 20 paddlers plus a drummer race four times across the weekend. Helmsmen are provided and assigned randomly. Entry costs CHF 600 per team.
